Pegs and I are back from Lille following Mamie's funeral, and we wanted to thank everyone who sent us e-mails and comments of support this past week. Mamie's service was a fitting farewell to an incredible woman, and the church was packed with friends and family who came from all over France to say their goodbyes, share their stories of their favorite memories of her and wish us the best. It was extraordinarily heartwarming to see how many lives she and my grandfather had touched throughout the years, and the attendees at the service included friends that they had made as far back as the Second World War who had traveled from the other side of the country just to be there. I'm not ashamed to say that I teared up when I saw people who my grandparents probably had not seen since they left Le Touquet five years ago silently making their way past her coffin to pay their final respects. At the reception after the service, everyone told me how close they felt to my grandmother, and most of them were able to say that they had spoken to her as recently as Christmas. Mamie was never far from the phone and loved to keep in touch with her family and friends, as evidenced perhaps most clearly by the multitude of cards that flooded Bon Papa's mailbox throughout the weekend. Saying goodbye to Mamie was not easy, but it was infinitely easier knowing that she will be remembered so well by so many. We should all be so fortunate to be so well-loved.
