Mama Pool broke the news to us on Friday (and presumably to the rest of the Vanderpool clan) that our beloved cat of almost twenty years, Duchess, is missing and is presumed to have passed away. For as long as most of us can remember (especially Damien, who is only a few years older than she was), Duchess has been a member of our family. Ever since we found her in the backyard when I was in the fifth grade, she was more than just a wonderful pet: she was an integral part of our household and our lives. She was always there to greet us in the morning with her broken little "meow"; she was always on the lookout for a backrub or a scratch behind the ears; and she was always ready to make room in the sunbeam for us during her afternoon nap. Many people don't think that cats are capable of being affectionate, faithful and full of personality, but Duchess was all three, and we're all richer for having had her in our lives. Duchess, home won't be the same without you.

Thanks, Lee. I really needed someone articulate to say something nice about her. I appreciate it. She was more than a pet. She was a staple of the Vanderpool clan, and it's just never going to be the same without her.
