He obviously wanted to get caught right? In this day and age, why would you leave a voicemail about something like paid homesexual trysts unless you wanted to get caught? And then why deny it? Has he already forgotten the whole "I have not had sexual relations with that woman, Miss Lewinsky" debacle? Or, even better, McGreevey? Or Foley?Update: See, he's caving already.

Is political power, in any form, worth the personal costs unless you use that power to pursue secret desires that you could not otherwise share openly?
Is this the stage that we have gotten to with our politicians? Is this a recent phenomonon, or is the ease of information making it that much more apparent. Let us remember J Edgar Hoover, for instance.

I think it's ease of info. There have always been scumbags, gays, wifebeaters, crooks, etc. There is an interesting series of books by Michael Farquhar on this. The best one is A Treasury of Royal Scandals: The Shocking True Stories History's Wickedest, Weirdest, Most Wanton Kings, Queens, Tsars, Popes, and Emperors.
The thing about Kings, Tsars, Emperors, etc. was that most of the time they didn't need to hide it. As Mel Brooks says, "It's good to be the King."
One of my favorite stories like this is the Belgium's King Leopold II, who fell in love with a sixteen year old French prostitute named Caroline, and in the process of spending millions upon millions of francs on her, exposed the financially questionable (not to mention murderous) practices of his companies in the Congo. He then died and left all his money to the happy hooker, much to the dismay of his children. It's the 19th century equivalent of Anna Nicole Smith.
In terms of U.S. politics, it's definitely a question of increased availability of info. Not only J Eddy Hoover, but also Kennedy, the Roosevelts...hell, some people even talk about Abraham Lincoln as the original Log Cabin Republican, right?
Oh, and as for the Tsars, while I'm sure a good many of the sexual kinks attributed to them were real, a whole lot of them stemmed from Soviet rewritings of history - hence the infamous Catherine the Great's death by horse lovin' story.
